The biggest used music and book sale in Honolulu is here, presented by the Friends of the Library of Hawaii. It isn't the popular McKinley sale, but "Friends, Books, Music: THE SALE", as FLH dubs it. The event takes place at their Kakaako warehouse this weekend, January 19-21, 2013. Doors open at 9:00am. And the winner is... Hawaii Record Fair!

As I mentioned earlier, the Hawaii Record Fair was a complete success. Music collectors from all over the island gathered to dig up long-time wants and new discoveries. Hell, some of the attendants didn't even own a turntable, but they still showed up to buy some vinyl! (This is 100% true, trust me.) One of the highlights of the event was the Aloha Got Soul door prize giveaway. Emcee Hector Elpe drew a raffle ticket at random and selected a lucky number. The winner? The Hawaii Record Fair blew my expectations away. People of all ages packed the McKinley High School cafeteria. Record diggers filled every space possible at each vendor table. "I had to make a couple circles just to hit every table, cause it's hard to find a spot at each vendor!" someone said.

Michael Paulo at Jazz Minds: Java and Jazz

Michael Paulo ushered a rotating string of artists up to the stage at Jazz Minds Café in Honolulu. He traded drummer for drummer for drummer, bassist for bassist plus another bassist. Michael added a guitarist to the mix, also switching out the pianist and adding another keyboardist, and all the while taking his five to 10 minute-long solos to new heights. Every week, a group of musicians calling themselves Project Monday gather at Jazz Minds cafe in Honolulu. The result is a hot mix of Latin jazz fusion a la Blue note during it peak era. No other clubs out there are doing this kind of thing right now. You can't find jam sessions like this in Honolulu, where some of Hawaii's best musicians collaborate in a wide-open platform with no restraints.
