Absolutely Mackey: a mix to honor Mackey Feary (and the Facebook Group dedicated to the singer)

The power of user-generated community and content is amazing. Inspiring. Profound, even. In 2011, not long after starting this blog, I decided to "embark" on the beginnings of what would be an all-encompassing project to document Mackey Feary's entire discography, "including special appearances, producer credits, foreign releases and unreleased recordings." So in June of that year, I created this page, and started to compile subsequent pages that recorded album covers, interviews, and related blog posts. The farthest I got with the project — well, it wasn't very far: I managed to create this discography (which I'll re-post below), as well...

Mackey Feary Band "Powerslide" (Full Version)

Back when Mackey Feary split from Kalapana to form his own band, Hawaii's music scene was reaching incredible heights with new releases from talented artists. The debut LP from Macky Feary Band is certainly one of the greatest examples of the era, fueled by influences from all over the spectrum: jazz, funk, Latin, and soul. After recording the album in near secrecy with his group—band members weren't allowed to tell anyone about the project—Mackey Feary launched his solo album to acclaim. Treasures on Tape: Mackey Feary Unplugged

To die-hard fans of Mackey: you'll smile, you'll cry, you'll cherish these recordings that YouTube user paxukulele recently uploaded. You won't find these recordings or photos anywhere else, as they come directly from one of Mackey's friends, via paxukulele. Close your eyes and transport yourself to a low-key house party where Kalapana's lead singer keeps rhythm on his acoustic guitar without missing a...

The Magic of Mack: Robin Kimura on Mackey Feary and his Band

My interview with Robin Kimura was lengthy (in a good way), but not nearly as long as the extended performances Greenwood played at Waikiki's popular discos back in the 1970s. Greenwood started out in Waikiki clubs as the 'off-night' band—when a club's main performer had the night off. But when it came to Mackey Feary, Greenwood actually played after the Mackey Feary Band—sometimes with Mackey joining the funky ensemble for songs like 'Nightbird' and 'The Hurt'! Here's another excerpt of my interview with Robin, as promised in part one. This time, Rob remembers Mackey and the Magic Mushroom, a Honolulu...
