When Kirk left Kalapana and returned to the islands, he wanted to give John Rapoza and 16 other Hawaii musicians a chance to showcase their talent in a super group called Lemuria.
Surrounding yourself with musicians is a great way to stay inspired. Living with them in a huge house by the beach? Even better. Ron Yuen of the Hawaii band Summer recalls living with the members of Kalapana—including Mackey Feary, DJ Pratt, Malani Bilyeu, Alvin Fejarang—at a house in Malibu. Here's part 2 of my interview with Ron Yuen.
searching the Internet for more information about Weekends on Malibu, the brilliant sophomore album by Summer, was like digging through hundreds of LPs without a sliver of hope you'll find what you're looking for. So I decided to go to the source, Ron Yuen, the guitarist and lead vocalist for Summer.
Social media is a marvelous thing. Case in point: I tweeted about Babadu a few months ago and @itsscottyk retweeted. Turns out it was drummer Scott Koher, who played on Babadu's album and a number of other Hawaiian soul, jazz, and funk recordings.
Today is a special day, my girlfriend's birthday! This post is in honor of her and her Japanese roots. It's also a post about a Kalapana album that not many people know about. Enjoy! Kalapana sat down in 1991 to create what should be a monumental album in their long list of recordings, but has [...]
To die-hard fans of Mackey: you'll smile, you'll cry, you'll cherish these recordings that YouTube user paxukulele recently uploaded. Despite the poor audio quality (not only was it a live recording, it's on cassette tape, remember those things?), the 9 minutes 33 seconds of Mack and friends jamming is a perfect way to uplift anyone's [...]
My interview with Robin Kimura was lengthy (in a good way), but not nearly as long as the extended performances Greenwood played at Waikiki's popular discos back in the 1970s. Greenwood started out in Waikiki clubs as the 'off-night' band—when a club's main performer had the night off. But when it came to Mackey Feary, [...]
"Moon & Stars" (live) by Mackey FearyA live recording of Mackey Feary singing "Moon & Stars" resurfaced on YouTube earlier this week. I wonder where it was recorded? No doubt he performed this with Kalapana, those backup vocals are so sweet! Enjoy this tender version of "Moon & Stars" courtesy of paxukulele. Keep his music [...]
I'm sorry for saying this, but if you weren't at the Hawaii Convention Center Ballroom to see Kalapana perform live at the 2011 Na Hoku Hanohano Awards, you'll never know the feeling of hearing the band play "Naturally" that night. In front of an audience who lauded (they were awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award) yet [...]
Here's a quick overview of what I took away from the 2011 Na Hoku Hanohano awards festival. Kalapana performing "Naturally" live as the recipients of a Lifetime Achievement Award (just magnificent!). Touch of Gold. A Hawaiian Philly Motown Soul-style vocal group with a touch of, well, gold. Resonating quotes from presenters and award-winners Photos, photos, photos Bob Dylan, Slack [...]
