If there were ever an urban legend about digging in Hawaii, it’d be that any time you visit Lihue on the island of Kauai, you find yourself a copy of “Lihue” by Nohelani Cypriano. There’s no such legend (though it came true for me). And I hate to say it, but there’s no such thing as Peace On Earth.
Unless you find it on an obscure LP like this one in Lihue. Then you’ve found Peace On Earth.
It’s a strange time for Kauai. Right now, the island has been tossed into a battle over GMO regulations. Just browse the Facebook pages of either anti- or pro-GMO groups, and you’ll see that Peace is a needle in a haystack. Whether your opinion is based on scientific fact or a spiritual connection to the land, there’s no way that both sides are going to reach any kind of agreement any time soon.
While I hope for the best on The Garden Isle, I know our world will never find total Peace. We struggle with negative vibes every day, whether fellow human beings send those vibes out intentionally or through their subconscious. Regardless, I try to see the positive in every situation, no matter what. But that won’t help our Earth find Peace.
It will, however, help me find Peace. And music is one medium that transports me there.
Over the years, I’ve had the great pleasure of meeting people who are equally (if not more) passionate about discovering Hawaiian music as I am. These people are located throughout the world. And on their journeys of musical discovery, they’ve happened upon Aloha Got Soul. Even though I don’t know every record that’s out there (and I have serious doubts that I’ll ever “find it all”), what’s most important to me—for me to find peace—is enjoying this music with those who share the same passion, curiosity and love of local music.
I’m not a walking encyclopedia. In all honesty, you’re reading a book that’s still being written: rough draft, Chapter One.
And so, I give you one of my latest findings: a Lihue high school band LP that I picked up on a recent trip to Kauai. The perfect souvenir to take home to Oahu, containing the perfect song to share with you in this moment. It’s called “Peace On Earth”.
